The BP Portrait Award is now making its yearly road trip and has just landed at the Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens. So for those of you from up North make your way to the lavish winter gardens and stately museum for some portrait treats. You can gage my portrait of Edward Lucie-Smith. The show is on at the museum until November 16th so when the days turn chilly you can always warm up in the glasshouse...people, portraits, flora and fauna. A grand day out.
Just came across an interview by Edward Lucie-Smith with Andy Warhol. As a fan I found this exchange very exciting and wanted to share.
Andy Warhol talks to Edward Lucie Smith about portrait painting, his choice of subject, his work process, wanting to paint as many pictures as he can, his love of his Sony Walkman, his favorite subject, his dislike of feelings and emotions, his sense of time and aging and his affection for everyone...priceless!! http://youtu.be/_wKh2ZdeZjk Cass Art is hosting two portrait art talks. Join myself and three other artists who are now exhibiting at the BP Portrait Award for an informal chit chat about portraiture techniques, processes, the ins, the outs, the highs, the lows. Should be a fun evening, I'm excited and can't wait to see the oil paint maker Michael Harding who will also be there with a demonstration. His name is on half the paint tubes in my art box. Cass art has their art shops all over town and they have a great program of educational events and activities. Pre book tickets online, August 12th at the Islington branch, for more info check out: http://www.cassart.co.uk/customer/workshops#2404
There is a further discussion on August 19th, details at: http://www.cassart.co.uk/customer/workshops#2407 What was generally a mundane Tuesday was enlivened by the artist's newsletter OPEN EXHIBITION produced by Art Has No Borders. They kindly put my work and info in thier "Artist of The Month" section...how cool is that! Thanks very much to Hannah
and the team! The newsletter is free and goes right into your inbox and as the name suggests has key info about the open exhibitions and competitions around the country. View the July edition, the link is below...click at the bottom of the newsletter if you want to subscribe for free : http://archive.aweber.com/openexhibition/OwaYP/h/OPEN_EXHIBITION_JULY_2014.htm Light Space & Time the online gallery has kindly
displayed a press release about my portrait of Edward Lucie-Smith and new digital iArtBook "Detailed Life". Many thanks for that. View the link: http://www.lightspacetime.com/artist-news/john-williams-art-featured-in-digital-iartbook/ What a day for me...had the best time at the press event and then the opening night party for the 2014 BP Portrait Award. Saw many old and new friends. Enjoyed seeing sitter Edward Lucie-Smith with his portrait hung in the National Portrait Gallery...thank you Edward for all your help! The show is now on in London thru to September 21st. http://www.npg.org.uk The 2014 BP Portrait Award is now open. A shot just inside the gallery, 55 portraits selected from 2,377 this year. My subject, art critic, author and photographer Edward Lucie-Smith having a look Edward and me. We started this project nine and a half months ago...and look where it ended up. A proud moment, great to have edward in attendance...thank you Edward! Lots to see and many different styles and techniques. Catch it while you can, the show is on in London all summer until the 21st of September. It will then travel to Sunderland and finish at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh.
Now's the time to get your 10% discount on the 2014 BP
Portrait Award catalogue for home delivery. I think once the show opens you will have to pay full price. I shall add this one to my collection with pride. http://www.npg.org.uk/shop.php Had a fun time at the opening party for the Joe Machine exhibition at the Omnibus arts centre. His work has always intrigued me and the new Alice in Wonderland theme to his new pieces were no exception. It is on until the 13th of June. www.omnibus-clapham.org The crowd starting to fill the Omnibus gallery. The artist Joe Machine...gotta love that name. His satirical piece in the background features Damien Hirst as the Mad Hatter. Edward Lucie-Smith looking good next to a model wearing a custom gown featuring photography by Edward. The model is actually Heather Wells and she is the Deputy Editor of The London Magazine. Dresses at the event were designed by Charlotte Machine. Dont ask me how but I managed to secure a printed photo from one of the gowns! Here is Edward adding his autograph for me...will need a good frame for that. Fun times!
Now showing with the online gallery Light Space Time. A selected selection of figurative art showing for the month of May. Check out part two of the show in this video. My work "WInter " is near the end. Loving the spacy music to go with the artworks. |
