Journey to North London! Went along to the Arts Depot opening of their ninth annual open exhibition. Said to be getting better each year and can say that I enjoyed what I saw....nearly bought a photo piece by Melissa Lane-Porter...hmmn, still thinking about it. (see below). Enjoyed meeting the nice people who put the whole thing together along with some interesting artists. The show will continue until the 8th of September. http://www.artsdepot.co.uk
Feeling excited about the upcoming Cork Street Open
Exhibition. Just framed my work and a few finishing touches to go. The show is in the heart of Mayfair and you will find an array of current painting, photography, sculpture, prints and more. This August, the 9th - the 16th at The Gallery in Cork Street, London, W1S 3NG. http://www.corkstreetopenexhibition.com/ So had what I'm sure will turn out to be one of the best nights of the summer, if not the year. Went along to the opening night party for the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists Portrait Prize. Spent the day enjoying the vibrancy of Birmingham including the world class Barber Institute of Fine Arts. (totally blown away). As an artist enjoyed chit chatting with fellow portrait painters especially one of my painting heros Simon Davis (see below). The level of quality was very high, so high that I felt grateful to be able to show my work amongst them. Group shot!...from left to right: Tim Benson - amazing artist, runner up prize winner and all round nice guy, me - first prize winner (yes its true), Nicola Kalinsky - Director of the Barber Institute of Fine Art and guest judge, Alastair Adams - President of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and show juror, Robert Neil - president of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, and Emily Porter-Salmon RBSA member and runner up prize winner for her excellent sculpture. Simon Davis, all star portrait painter and one of the jurors asked to take a photo. Me trying to keep it together.
The summer is shaping up nicely and I will be enjoying two summer show openings soon. My work has been selected to show at the annaul Art Depot Open and one of my new Hanging Fruit paintings has been shortlisted for the Cork Street Open Exhibition in Londons historic Cork Street. Truly happy to be on show as the temperature rises. Summertime and art seems to go together some how.
http://www.artsdepot.co.uk http://www.corkstreetopenexhibition.com Very excited to have been selected to show two of my portraits at the annual portrait prize exhibition by the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists. The show is a mix of artists from around the country and will have 50 works including some from the Royal Society of Portrait Painters here in London. The show is on from the 17th of July thru the 24th af August 2013. More infomation on their website, http://www.rbsa.org.uk Birmingham road trip! Can't wait!
Totally enjoyed the reception and opening of the annual show held by the RP. Stayed for 3 hours mixing and chatting to other artists and members of the society. Everyone was in good spirits, as a portrait painter it doesnt get much better than this. On arrival there was a parade just outside and lo and behold the Queen glided by in one of her horse drawn golden carriages. She didn't pop in.
Can hardly believe that I have been selected to show my portrait of Rita at this years Royal Society of Portrait Painters annual exhibition. Will show along with some of the big boys and girls in the portrait world. So, so happy, I feel a little sick. Will post more details when I recover. This years exhibition will be on display at the Mall Galleries near Trafaglar square between the 9th and 24th of May 2013.
So ...again was very excited to deliver my newly finished painting titled 'Winter' to the National Portrait Gallery's annual open exhibition. With a large bubble wrapped package (and a google map) under my arm I finally arrived to the airport hanger size of a warehouse in Bermondsey to drop off the work for judging. Had a sneeky peek behind the reception area to the vast space beyond and saw what was thousands of portraits lined up, in groups of about 10 per stack. Quickly realized the scale of this prestigious event...wow.
I know that its been awhile since any updates but I have been working super hard on two new portraits, both of which are nearly finished....hooray! This detail is of Sarka showing only the face for now. There is a lot of finishing touches to work out still. Very happy to have her as the model again. I will title the painting "Haru in Wonderland".
